    RAW Image Viewer

    This is my first ever post. I just purchased a new computer with
    Windows 7. Windows Photo Viewer will not preview my photos that are in the Nikon .NEF (RAW) format. Several websites (including Mocrosoft) direct me to the following URL to download the correct codecs files for my D80 camera:

    www.microsoft.com/prophoto/downloads/codecs.aspx

    This link does not work. Can someone instruct me on how I can make changes to Windows 7 so that I can preview these photo images?

    Welcome to 7 forum cinnamoninn95...
    1 simple way is to get Picasa 3.5 & then you can view the RAW format because its supports RAW & other format...It is based on GDI+ [1] and is capable of viewing image formats supported by GDI+, namely, JPEG, BMP, PNG, GIF (including animated GIFs), ICO, WMF, EMF and TIFF format files.
    RAW image formats used by high-end professional cameras are also supported by installing their respective WIC codecs which NEF codecs. You might wanna check this: Nikon Imaging | Global Site | NEF Codec Download
    this has the NEF codecs for D80 camera.
    Hope this resolve the issue, if not then lets know so we can check it for you....

    Thank you. Yes I used your information, and now I can view my RAW files using Windows Live Photo Gallery. After posting my question here, I sent a request to Nikon, and they responded several hours after you, and gave the same information as you did.

    Your information was a big help for me.

    I find it bizarre that Nikon would recommend a product other than their own Nikon Capture software. It's free, and should have been shipped with the camera.

    Thanks but not for 64 bit W7

    Thanks Mike but the Panasonic codec for RW2 for W7 does not work with 64 bit - so far, they do not seem to be intending to bring one out! However, a partial answer, apart from Piccaso 3, was to download FastSone Image Viewer 4.4 which also has some limited editing capability. I found that prog as a result of reading a thread on here!     This works;

    Welcome to Camera Bits, Inc.

    if you have any Adobe stuff, this will convert to dng:

    Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Windows : Adobe DNG Converter 6.3 update

    It is a pain to have to use all this stuff and various workarounds.
