yes, i was referring to cdex. thanks for the confirmation. i am also aware of media monkey and wouldn't mind paying the 20 bux for mp3 encoding, but once i'm finished with this current tape-to-mp3 conversion project, i will be doing much less ripping of CDs.

i'm really only using WMP because its 'there' and i DO like the way it provides (most of the time) the small art jpegs. otherwise, i have to go track them down myself and save them to the folder. will cdex and/or media monkey do this? i know, "install them and find out." i did that regularly with windows xp, but now that i'm mainly on 7, i don't use it as a guinea pig unless i'm fairly certain of the results. this is because i'm not nearly as well-versed in 7 as i was in xp and if i break something, it is uncertain whether i can fix it.

thanks to all for the suggestions/input...

Windows 7 Ultimate x86

no worries...CDex does query freedb for song info (to prevent you from having to punch that all in by hand) but it doesn't collect any artwork.
MediaMonkey does collect/show Cover art. (via amazon IIRC)
Like I said, I use Tag&Rename for that purpose. No idea if the 30 day trial version allows it or not

make sure tracks are checked

Just posting in case anyone else has this problem. I wanted to rip a CD a second time, couldn't figure out why Windows Media Player wouldn't let me... turns out the program automatically unchecks all tracks once it completes ripping. This will grey out the Rip CD icon. You just need to check them all again, and it will give you the option to rip the CD.

True although the crippling isn't all that bad. The lifetime Gold (paid) version is only $50 (last time I checked) and you pick up some other options besides better rips (in my case, the ones that interested me were the sleep timer as well as the enhanced ripping).

It's a pity Media Monkey uses FreeDB instead of Gracenote and doesn't upload entries. More times that not, I have to edit or replace the meta data from FreeDB because many miserable, misbegotten morons upload data to FreeDB that is grossly inaccurate, often completely stupid.

Linux CENTOS 7 / various Windows OS'es and servers

Hi there

I'm still using Winamp for CD ripping - works very well -- however there are loads of CD ripping Software out there -- Windows Media is always rubbish compared with anything else.

VLC (FREE !!) also works !!!! (a lot of people don't actually realize that it can be used for ripping !!!

However I use Winamp since it uses Gracenote and saves me tagging files. You might be able to find Winamp on a torrent as it's no longer sold any more. Pity as I still think it's a great piece of software.
