Unable to rip CD second time

i created a CD from an old mix tape and ripped it to a 192/mp3 via win7 ultimate and media player. wanted to rip a second time and media player wouldn't allow it. RIP is greyed out now and status = 'ripped to library'. Huh? this is NOT a commercial CD. i checked the rip settings and protection is not selected. how can i overcome this restriction? tried changing the destination path and file name/details, but still no-go. makes no sense, please help...

deleting the contents of this file:C:\Users\[USERNAME HERE]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Media Player\Transcoded Files Cache and deleting the files: C:\Users\[USERNAME HERE]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Media Player\CurrentDatabase*.wmdb & localmls.wmdb clears most data from WMP12, and should allow you to rip the CD again without losing your music files, although WMP will have to rebuild your media library.. you'll have to restart your computer first, and enable "show hidden files" to get there

thanks man, but what is up with that? will this happen every time i want to re-rip a cd or is this instance just a one-off? how can this be prevented?

also, i don't keep music in 'libraries', as such. i created folders on another partition and keep them there. i DO rip to the desktop, however, which apparently IS a library and then move them elsewhere. how will the rebuilding of the library affect these files in their current locations (on the other partition)?

What I would recommend is not using WMP to rip CDs, because it's limited to wma and mp3 format.. I know there are better CD ripping and conversion programs for windows but I usually use Linux for editing or converting media, and I'm not sure which Windows apps to recommend..

If you use a 3rd party app to rip CDs to a lossless format like wav, ogg or flac, you can make as many versions as you want (such as a high quality 320KB/s mp3 version for playing in your car stereo and a low quality 96KB/s aac version for an IPOD) by copying the reference files to a different folder and converting them to whichever format you need, depending on the device you want to use, without losing any of the original CD quality sound from the reference files.. I have 4000+ CDs stored in wav format on a media server at home.. in .wav format its 3.6 TB, same music in mp3 on my laptop at work, 200 GB.

ordinarily i wouldn't use wmp, but it has been working well (thus far) for this particular project (archiving some old taped material). i don't need high quality and have been ripping these at a 192 rate. the original material is on magnetic tape (cassette), so they weren't high quality to begin with. stupid libraries...

In that case you don't really need WMP.. I know there are better cd rip tools out there.. however the free ones are usually a neutered "trial" version of some "full" or "pro" version that is nothing more a $29.99 windows skin on something like Grip+Gnac, which are opensource (free) but only work in linux.

i know and i do have other programs i can use (on another machine), but now this has come down to me or windows and i hate being dominated my inanimate object...

I hear that.. that's why I went into business for myself ..I no longer have to listen to some overeducated dimwit who thinks their fancy college degree makes them smarter than everyone else telling me I have to use this program for that problem, when I can usually think of a half a dozen ways to get the same thing done in less time

That's even worse than WMP.. The current version of iTunes causes some windows 7 systems to crash and only rips to a version of the mp4/aac format that only works in iTunes and a very limited set of linux apps
