Cannot Burn Audio CD

Hello. If this is in the wrong section, please move it where it belongs?

My DVD writer is: HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-H73N C109 (E:) (ATAPI) it is a SATA drive.

• I can read CDs
• I can read DVDs
• I can burn DVDs
• I CANNOT burn Audio CDS.

• I have removed the drive in device manager and re-detected it.

• I removed the upper and lower filter registry key, then removed the drive, then rebooted and it was reinstalled.

• I checked the cables.

• I do not have any SecureROM or other protection drivers in device manager.

• I have Virtual Clone Drive 5.4.3.5 installed, but removed it, rebooted, no change, so I reinstalled it.

Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. Q6600 Quad core, 4GB Ram, 1,5 TB disk space in 2 drives.

I have tried CD BurnerXP, IMGburn, Ashampoo, and Windows Media Player. I also have Winamp Pro installed with the Sonic runtime. No services in service manager dealing with the drive.

The drive is good, or else it wouldn't read or burn anything else?

Please help. I back up all purchased CDs in case the kids decide to play Frisbee. Thanks in advance.

Can you burn data disks ? Try to burn a data disk with your audio files ... it will work .

Is there an actual error you receive when you try to burn the CD, or is the feature simply not detectable by the programs you used?

In any case, you should visit the manufacturer's website and find updated firmware to install, that would surely be a good place to start troubleshooting.

@Arc: the resulting CD would not be playable in a home or car player without MP3 capabilities.

@Gornot: Latest firmware version is C109 from 11/2009 and is up to date.

I was able to burn the audio CD on another computer here in the house, so it isn't the media or the files. Since it will burn data CDs, the media is compatible.

The error I get is:

I replaced the 'HLDS GSA-H73N HH' with a 'PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-216D', and the issue remains. I removed the old drive through device manager, shut down, installed the new drive, and booted back into Windows. Detection and install was flawless (I love Windows 7).

It must be a software conflict, a driver, or registry related. The burner I replaced works perfectly on my kids' XP dual core.

Are you doing disc to disc or are you ripping it to the hard drive. I use Roxio and have never had a prob.

I bought Katy Perry's CD for my daughter, and as I always do I ripped it to my hard drive. I then burn her a copy so that the original doesn't get destroyed in her car. So I am burning from MP3s on my drive. I don't think it is the burning software, I have used IMGburn, Ashampoo, CdBurnerXP, CDRTools, Windows Media Player, and Winamp. All do the same thing. I am almost certain it is a WIndows issue but I have no idea how to log or debug it. I cannot find where CDBurnerXP keeps it's log...

I've been rereading your post and the error seems to be between the file and the burner, it can't read the file. Could it be DRM not allowing it to be read

There is some quick solution for your for your problem . As you have the disk, have a disk to disk copy . I expect it will work .

Secondly , an audio cd contains musics in .wav format ; so the burner is probably failing to convert mp3 files to wav during burning , and hence it is saying that it is not a proper cd ... rather than it becomes an mp3 cd , which is playable on a player that supports mp3 playback . So you should try such a program that converts file type during burning like Free Mp3 To Audio CD Burner , or first convert it to wav and the burn as audio cd .
