Windows 7: Codecs ! Shark or K-Lite ?

Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Guys, i'm not an expert
Just asked about the codecs, because i think i have a small problem, caused by the K-Lite codecs.
As i said, i use Windows 7 Professional x86
Sometime, when i don't use my computer for 10-20 minutes ( monitor doesen't turn off, i choiced that ) the Aero Themes change to Basic, and after 20-30 seconds everything is "normal" ... i mean the Basic themes change back to Aero Theme.
After i Googled a bit, i found out that some codecs may be the problem.
PS : i use KMPlayer for movies and AIMP2 for music.
Do you think, it's okay to uninstall K-Lite codec pack, and leave only the OS default codecs ?
Thanks again.

Here is a Wiki article written by one of my old friends that might give you some insight of what codecs can do to you: Why Codec Packs Are Bad - How-To Geek Wiki

KMPlayer, just like VLC, can play many video types using internal codecs, therefore, you can safely uninstall K-Lite and continue using your PC without any additional codecs. Should the need for codecs arise, however, Shark's codecs are the way to go.

Heres my opinion on it.

For the most part, you really shouldn't need anything.

However, it depends heavily on what software (Players) you use, types of files you are dealing with etc.

I agree with previous statement: "None, but if you must Sharks codec"

The only reason I have Sharks Codec pack installed ATM, is due to Video encoding.
I have found the result turn out better when the decoding/re-coding is done via FFDshow.
So thats 1 reason that goes to having the Shark codecs.

As far as Playback:
I use Nero Showtime as my default player as well as WMP12 at times.
So in terms of playback, codecs are really not needed as what WMP12 will not play, Showtime will without issue.

For the most part, WMP12 will play a large majority of the more popular types of files by default quite nicely.

It does have issues with some file types though.
1) MKV files
2) Certain MP4 files. For example if the MP4 has AC3 5.1 audio, you will get a picture but no sound.

In a case like this, codecs can help. (or more likely the haali-gabest splitters) if you want to use only WMP12.

But, if you have a 3rd party player this issue may not be a problem anyway.
For example, Nero Showtime supports MP4 w/AC3 audio, MKV files etc --- and if Im not mistaken VLC does as well.

So the moral of this little story is ... a Codec pack isn't really needed.
For the files that do have issues with WMP12, you could easily play witha 3rd party player.

If you are into serious Video encoding ... well ... codecs may very well be an advantage. At least IMHO.

I've had similar issues and took the lazy way out- I have klite on one machine, Shark's on another. Neither has given any trouble.

Suggest you try either and stick to it unless it bothers you.

Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1 (desktop)

I have the Shark pack on this machine, and WMP12 has played anything I have tried to play on it. That said, now I only use it for video, and I never tried any of the more obscure audio types, like WavPack, or APE, with it.

I don't know, but everytime i don't use my PC for 10-15 minutes, the Aero Themes changes to Basic.
Why that ? I use the option "never turn off monitor"
