Windows 7: Photo Gallery can't open this picture or video.

Photo Gallery can't open this picture or video.

Can anybody please help me???

I get the following error message when attempting to open my pictures:

"Photo Gallery can't open this picture or video. This format is not supported, or you don't have the latest updates to Photo Gallery"

Somehow the photos didn't get properly saved on the PC and, unaware of this situation, I deleted the photos from the SD card. I've managed to retrieve the photos from the SD card using a free online software but the JPEG files are corruptively named as #MG_1584, #MG_1585, #MG_1586 and so on.

I can see that the photo property details are stil accurate such as Date & time taken, image size etc etc) but I cannot open any of the files. I have compared them with JPEG photos which I can successfully open and the only difference is in the name. Instead of #MG_1585 the good ones have IMG_1585.

These pictures are so important and I don’t know what else to do get them.

Can anybody please help me???

MR RS

Hello MR RS, and welcome to Seven Forums.

The images may be to corrupted and not fully recovered to be able to open.

You might see if unhiding known file extensions, then check to see if they have the correct file extension on them. If not, then you can rename them so that they do.

Hope this may help,
Shawn

Have you tried renaming them and saving as .jpg or JPEG?

Thanks for your help thus far Brink

I have done exactly as you have suggested above but did not manage to open any of the corrupted files even after renaming them. In your troubleshooting career have you ever seen anyone being able to recover images from this stage???

I'm absolutely gutted about it

You might see if trying different free recovery programs like Recuva where one of them may be able to completely recover the files from the SD card.

If not, then it looks like you may not be able to recover them. A computer data recovery shop in your area may have better equipment and programs that may work, but they do not come cheap and may not work either.

Can you reply, posting just one of the problematic images as a .zip attachment. We'll have a look and see if we can come up with something.

Simply attach it to your next post. Click on the paperclip icon, click Browse... and locate the file, and then click Upload. Click on Close this window. To insert the attachment, click on the paperclip icon again, and the file will be listed underneath. Just click on it to insert it in your post at the current cursor position.

Thanks. I'll have a look at it tomorrow as it's time for me to hit the flea pit. No guarantees on what result, if any, I or anyone else can come up with.
