    SOLVED - 720p streaming problems...?

    Hey all,

Quick question on behalf of a friend. He has been streaming media from his Win7 desktop to his PS3 using a program called "PS3 Media Server" for the last year and a half.

However, tonight for no reason he cannot get that program or any other server program he tries to stream 720p video anymore. He has tried 3 different programs, which is what makes us think that maybe there is a setting in Win7 somewhere that changed, however, he has not personally changed anything in Win7 or in the Server programs whatsoever (or on his PS3 for that matter, nor have their been any recent PS3 updates), so it is not something that he/updates had done from what we can tell.

According to him, when trying to stream 720p video, it "will play for 2 seconds then freeze, play 2 more seconds then freeze" where it previously worked flawlessly.

Anybody with any ideas would be appreciated! :)

His PC stats are as follows:

    Intel Core 2 Duo e8400 Processor @ 3.0ghz, 4gig DDR2 RAM, 8800gt 512mb Vid card w/ latest drivers

    Cheers!

    This sounds like a sudden slowing of his download speed. Get him to do a speed check with this;

But this is streaming from his desktop PC to his PS3 within his private home network, so his internet speed should have nothing to do with it; thanks for the reply though! :)

Oh I see, sorry about that, I misunderstood. As I am not into gaming and have never used a PS3 then I'm afraid you must wait for others to assist. Sorry

    few thoughts here.

    sounds like buffering.

is the ps3 connected wirelessly or hard wired to the network?
if it's wireless, there's your culprit.

any errors on the windows side? event log, etc?
what about streaming something that doesnt require transcoding? like say .mpg or .avi?

It's hard-wired through his router; only thing he uses wireless for is his netbook / laptop from work.

He tells me that he had converted some of the videos to .mpg to test it and it gave him the same problem - play for 2 seconds then freeze, play 2 more seconds then freeze where it previously worked flawlessly.

As for the Win7 log, he hasn't checked it (said he was fed up and was going to wait until after Christmas to troubleshoot it, but I figured I would be helpful, post here on his behalf and see if we could come up with any ideas, as we're stumped!)

He did tell me that he had installed some new vid. card drivers, the latest, in the 2 days before so he's thinking it may be those, but he hasn't tried rolling back yet.

Or perhaps try a system restore to a point before the problem started!

Hey all, thanks to you folks for the replies....we're still not sure what caused the problem, but my friend went away for a few days and when he come back and turned his computer on (although he had restarted it many, many times while he was trying to figure this out) his streaming was magically working again!

    Solved...through doing nothing apparently :)

But I am still wondering why at all your friend should stream using PS3 Media server, when W7MP itself can be set to stream to the PS3. (While I have set up my desktop W7MP to stream to my PS3, I seldom do that and so have no idea whatsoever on any problems in streaming from W7MP)
