    My Pictures

    whs,
    Thanks!
Looks like a definite maybe, then! Seems that there will be more problems going to Linux that I have with W7.
It has taken me 5 years to get this far, being past my sell-by date, I can't see myself taking more time to learn a new system.
    But thanks for that, anyway!

    Regards

    Colin

Colin, I stuck my nose into Linux (Ubuntu, Mint and Fedora). Believe me, Win7 is a piece of cake compared to the challenges ahead for you in Linux. I still run Ubuntu in a virtual macine and there are some things I like about it. But overall, it is a challenge - even though I have been around computers all my life. But now at 73, I like my creature comforts.

I think I'm getting too old to understand everything. For instance this when you say with Windows 7 Bluetooth and Infrared no longer work. If this is the same computer where you had XP with Bluetooth and Infrared, then of course they work also in Seven. Just install the drivers. If this a new computer that became pre-installed with Windows Seven but which does not have Bluetooth and Infrared hardware, it most certainly is not Microsoft's or Windows' fault. It simply means you bought wrong computer. You can not blame a software and OS maker when the hardware you need is not included in your computer.

If this is the case, that your computer does not have Bluetooth and Infrared hardware, you can get USB receivers for both with a few euros / pounds / dollars. If your computer has Bluetooth and Infrared, you should rather ask us to help you to find and install the correct drivers than rant that they do not work.

By the way, if your computer does not have BT and IR hardware, it does not help to switch to Linux. If your computer has the hardware, you still need to install the drivers also in Linux.

    Really, I do not understand.

    strollin,
    Thanks for your remarks.
As I understand you, I would have to, for example, put a number under the photo - probably alongside the number from the camera - to enable that photo to go to a preferred location in the file? (presumeably, if a successive photo requires insertion it woulñd have to have n 'a' or 'b' etc, alongside it?)
I have no idea why my W7 does not have bluetooth or infra red. It never came with it, or if it did, I can not find it anywhere. Where would I search for a ?dongle? - whatever that is - and would I be advised to get one for infra red also?
(Pardon my ignorance - I've only had a computer for 5 years, and being past my sell-by date, I find this a pretty steep learning curve!

    Regards

    Colin.
If you have pictures named apple.jpg, bear.jpg, cat.jpg and dog.jpg Windows would sort them in that order. If you wished them to be in the order cat.jpg, dog.jpg, apple.jpg, bear.jpg you could rename them with a prefix such as 000_cat.jpg, 0001_dog.jpg, 0002_apple.jpg, 0003_bear.jpg. This would cause Windows to order them in that sequence.

Bluetooth is a hardware feature. Win 7 does support Bluetooth but you need to have the Bluetooth hardware installed before Windows can use it. The easiest way I've found to add Bluetooth to a computer that doesn't have it is thru the use of a USB Bluetooth dongle like those listed here.

    Strollin,

That is great, and all I was searching for. I obviously have not got BT or IR on my W7 as a standard. The link you added has shown me the way forward, and I shall search for those items here in Spain.
Your explanation of the enumeration of the pictures makes sense and I shall try that out.
Altogether, you have been of great assistance and unless I have any unforseen difficulty, I believe that you have completely answered my questions!
    My Very Grateful Thanks!

    Happy New Year.

    Colin.

    Kari,
Pardon me for inferring that my Bluetooth and Infra red no longer work. I meant to inform that when I had XP I had bluetooth and infrared installed when I bought it.
When I bought my W7, I could not find either of them and was trying to find out if I had "overlooked" them or if I should try to obtain them from somewhere.
I was not blaming Windows or M/S for the lack of them, only trying to find out if they were 'standard.'
I am so sorry if you think I was "Ranting," that was not my intent. I am upset that W7 does not allow various programmes that XP allowed and that they are not compatible - which rather negates a fairly large original financial outlay. I thought that by entering this forum that I was asking for help to sort out the problem. If that means asking the right questions, then I regret that my questions were not clear enough. "Goineasy9" appeared to understand my problem, and has been of great assistance.
Thank you for the information about Linux, it appears that will not be an option now, I would really dislike the same problems to occur again.
I regret, also, that you did not understand, I hope this short explanation has assisted the 'fog' to clear, and you now understand. I am sure that your advanced years have no bearing on your ability to comprehend! Being myself well past my 'sell-by' date, I am working hard at this computer "learning" business, with a slow but steady success-rate thanks to people like yourself who are willing to share their knowledge.

    Regards,

    Colin

Their file location is users/ user/my pictures/ then the named file. I do not have a problem because they are downloaded by Picasa, as such. However, as Dnorris mentioned in his answer, MS have made the movement of photos in the file impossible. Therefore if I wish to add photos to the file, they go where MS dictate not to the location where I wish them to be - I find this a trifle aggrivating.(eg: If I have pictures of houses and pictures of trees in a file, if I download a picture of a tree and it downloads in amongst the houses, there is no way that I can put it amongst the trees because it will only go in the location that a new photo is designated to go by MS in the programme).

    Colin.
There are a couple of places where you say "file" but I wonder if you mean folder? You can create folders and move pictures from folder to folder in the Pictures folder? You can do it in any of the Library folders. Also if you right click say an image on the internet and select "save as" you can save it where you want to. Things aren't as locked down as you might think they are. I also went from XP to windows 7 and some things caused me to say WFT, why is it like that. But after using it for a while you couldn't pay me to go back to XP. If you keep wanting it to be like XP your going to be disappointed. Stuff that made me scratch my head trying to remember how to do it I do without even thinking about it now. It does so much more, it just takes a little learning to get the most out of it.

    My Pîctures

    alphanumeric,
    Thanks for your reply.
You are correct, I misused the word and should have said 'Folder.' Yes, I can move them from file to file but once they are in a folder, they can't be moved. This was the reason for my original question. Thank you for putting me right on that point, and my apologies for any misleading that I may have caused.
I am going to try to re-number the photos in each folder as I was advised, and see if that will enable them to go where I want them to go.
I feel that my questoions have all been answered, and I am satisfied that everyone has been so helpful.
I shall return to the forum if I have any more questions with the knowledge that there is a lot of experience and help to obtain from the members here.
    Thank you all very much.

I am not sure how to "close" a thread when it has been completed, and would ask if someone could either do this for me, or tell me how I can do this.

    Regards

Click on the little red triangle at the top of this post and type "Resolved" in the message box. A mod will give the thread a green tick. have done this one!

To have a thread marked as "closed", all you need to do is click on the red triangle and enter "solved" in the text box, and a moderator will mark it as solved... I have already done this for you...
