My File Thumbnails Keep Disappearing!

Most of the pictures in my "My Pictures" folder display their thumbnails. But anytime I save a picture from online or copy some from my camera, they don't show up. They just show the little standard JPEG mountain scene. Other times if I open a folder with a lot of images, I don't even get the mountain scene. This happens all the time and there's no pattern to it at all. It even happens with other kinds of files in different views, like list and tile. For work we convert a lot of documents from Word to PDF so I was deleting repeats and had them in list format, but I couldn't use the icons to differentiate word files from acrobat files. They were just the little white page icons. If I restart sometimes they come back. Any suggestions!? Please help!
