Media Player Crashes with Stop 124

My video adapter, according to the Device Manager, is a Radeon X1300 with the Microsoft provided driver. Driver Update produced to better driver.

I did as you suggested and installed the Shark Codec but the same thing still happens. Any time I try to use Media Player to play a .wmv file, it starts the video and quickly generates what sounds like a 60Hz hum then I get the blue screen showing a BC stop code.

Have you other suggestions?

We would be able to help you more if you filled in the syste specs so we would know abt your hardware. There is one solution for sure. A clean install of win 7

That 'one solution for sure' did not solve the problem. Immediately after completing the new installation, I tried to run the sample video file from the library and once again got the blue screen BC 124 stop.

Here are the specs of the machine that I believe are applicable to the problem.

Mother Board
Micro-Star LTD MS-7253 1.0 with a Phoenix BIOS (latest version)

Memory
1024 Megabytes

Processor
2.5G AMD Althon

Display
Radeon X1300 Series Adapter

Multmedia
BelArc Advisor reports it simply to be a High Definition Audio Device

I hope the above can help someone give a solution to this vexing thing. I have pretty well wrung out W7 on this machine except for installing Excel and Word and have had no game ending problems except for the Media Player crashes.

If not, then there's a bunch of things that could be causing this -
- Hardware problems
- Compatibility problems
- Drivers problems

I can view Wildlife.wmv in XP just fine.

I ran the upgrade advisor you suggested and it found no problems. I think that it was the beta version of the one that I ran from the RC download.

Interestingly, I looked in BIOS to see if there was a way to disable the onboard graphics adapter thinking I would disable it and plug in another card but could find no way to do that. Strange, huh?

May not be all that weird some mobo's dont even show vga w/o the vid card on so you wouldn't hae a way to turn it back on.

Here is some additional info:

I am attaching the minidump file that the crash produced.

Event Viewer shows the following error around the time of the crash:

"The Ati External Event Utility service failed to star due to the following error:

The system cannot find the file specified."

I've no idea whether or not that error has anything to do with it.



Additional points --

1.I have thought about installing a Nvidia video adapter but can find no way to disable the onboard adapter either in BIOS or by a jumper on the MB which is an MSI K9VBM-V.

2.Just to check that I had not installed something that causes this crash, I reinstalled the RC and immediately tried to play a .wmv file. Same crash.

3.This problem is very repeatable. All I have to do is open any .wmv file and it runs for a fraction of a second and then crashes.

4.Media Player will play any music file as well as movies from a CD or recorded movies from TV.
