Explorer Crashes When Viewing .mkv files (thumbnails)

This problem has bugged me for a few weeks now and I can't seem to find a solution. When I open the folder, some folders' thumbnails load quickly while others don't at all or only a fewfiles (when i look inside a particular folder). The green 'loading bar" in the filepath bar stops moving and explorer.exe crashes and restarts. This only happens with the .mkv files, I've never had a problem with .avi or other formats. Below you'll find what Event Viewer had to say about the error.

Did you check the filetype association for .mkv. If you want to play them, I recommend VLC Download VLC Media Player 1.1.7 - FileHippo.com

Playing the files is not the issue, it's viewing the thumbnails in windows explorer. I run MPC-HC with CCCP. I had VLC in the past and didnt like it. If thats the only way, then i can live with it and use another view, since the problem is only with thumbnails. Thanks for the suggestion though.

So it works in e.g. List view but not in Icon view? In that case I would change the thumbnails.

I use only WMP/WMC and Shark 007 codecs and have the same problem. At this point of time I do not recall what exactly I do to circumvent this problem but I do succeed by playing around with " Always show icons.never thumbnails " in the Folder Options and/or "Disable the DivX Media Foundation splitter" in the settings application under MKV tab of Shark007 codecs.(run the settings application as an administrator)

Size: 92.5 KB

Do not know whether this will apply in your case.

The CCCP codec pack has corrupted the MSVCR80.dll that thumbnails those .mkv files.

I would completely uninstall that codec pack and install something more reliable. I would suggest Shark007's codec pack, as shown above, but I've recently had problems with it as well (as have others). And, going to his forum for help is pretty useless as he will throw a tantrum if you ask a question more than once that he thinks he's answered (even when he hasn't actually answered your question nor helped you) and threatens to ban you if you post up the question again. He's kind of like the soup nazi for his codec package. He wants you to download it but don't ask more than one question or no soup/codecs for you.

I ended up uninstalling ALL codecs and reinstalling CCCP. I also had to delete a folder of .mkv's that i assume something was wrong with since every time I selected it, Explorer would crash. Thumbnails working now, except for a few select files, but no more crashes so far. Thanks everyone for the help.

I found that with .mkv files which caused my explorer to "crash," it was usually a muxing problem with the .mkv file itself.

The workaround I use now is to "re-mux" the file in question with a stable version of MKVMerge (I use v4.0.0) and the thumbnails always generate correctly without crashing explorer.

I read a few different scenarios about why this happens but all I could gather was something with "headers" and default settings. Anyway, the "re-mux" method always works for me.

Cheers!

Glad to see this resolved, though:

This points to Visual C++ Redistributables. Have you updated these lately (you should probably have all of them, 2005, 2008 and maybe even 2010)? Be sure to also check Windows Update, there have been new updates on Tuesday, one of which was KB2538243 (for C++ 2008 SP1 redis. package).
