Lastly just to add food for thought I have noticed that when the streaming is nice and smooth for both audio and video the CPU useage is below 10%. But when it gets choppy in FF/Chrome/WMC/HP Smart Media the CPU useage jumps to over 30%-40% or sometimes higher. Then none of the streaming applications work properly in that they all run choppy.

Sounds like a memory leak to me? I'm no pro on the knowledge of memory but I'm sure someone will know, have you tried the memory tester that comes with windows? Here's a video of how to access it I made for vista forums but it works for 7 as well YouTube - ‪Vista forums video‬&rlm;

Thanks for the reply. I would agree with you but cannot explain why Windows Media Player works pretty well when watching a DVD. We get no choppy video but get a little but subtle static with the audi.

I was wondering if it could be possible that our Norton Security Suite 5.0.29 which comes with an AntiVirus component is causing the issue. The reason that I believe that it could be NSS is because the streaming of video from Netflix or Hulu or Youtube and DVD playback all need to buffer video and audio streaming to disk. That is where Norton kicks in. That it scans all writes to disk and reads.

I'd get rid of Norton with a removal tool and install MSE, a less bloated choice.

Thanks for the reply. This laptop belongs to my uncle and not me. So I want to be careful installing new programs or uninstalling existing. But here is what I did. I ran the Windows 7 in SafeMode with Networking. Guess what the video playback was smooth as silk. No choppiness whatsoever but I had no audio because it was running in SafeMode. Norton was not running either. So I am starting to believe that maybe its either Malware related or Norton's or a Windows service. The video card drivers and settings seemed to be just fine and same for motherboard drivers. Same goes for Silverlight as Netflix in google chrome was working flawlessly.

Hehe, My brother installed NSS on his XP and it jammed everything up so bad he couldn't do anything. The moment he uninstalled it, everything went back to normal.
If you don't have a very powerful computer than Norton is not for you.

I'm having the same problem: Choppy Video. i reformatted my drive and re-install OS (Windows 7 32-bit), updated all my drivers.. (using filehippo) but when i tried playback of 3gp files or mpg, sometimes even flv files, i get a choppy video although the sounds seems to have no problem. below is my spec..

Sorry guys I thought I had posted a solution to the above issue. As was suggested by Mr. Needs reinstalling the video drivers did the trick the video choppiness has gone away and all is working. Apparently trying the video playback in Safe mode would work perfectly and in normal mode I would encounter the choppiness. Right now after reinstalling the video drivers all is working perfectly.
