Win 7 makes jpeg hidden file when tag is added

    Hi

When I add a tag to a jpeg file, win 7 turns the file into a hidden file. I can reset this in the file properties but then the file is no longer searchable using any of its file name as a search term.

    Any thoughts?

In the start search type "hidden", click show hidden files. Then tick the Show hidden files, folders, and drives.

Or can you search the tag?

Win 7 makes jpeg hidden file when tag is added

    Hi

But why do I need to have hidden files turned on? The jpgs are fine until I save a tag to them - then they become hidden. I do not understand why.

Also, my 'Documents' and 'Music' libraries folders are affected by turning on and off the hidden folders setting. This didn't used to happen. If I turn hidden folders to 'do not display etc' they disappear?

If not checked they, well, are hidden and you don't see them.
Sounds like a different issue with libraries though.
Try running sfc /scannow and Restore Default Libraries.

    Not much help here.

    I'M not offering any help, but . . .

I am running Win 7 Home Prem 32 bit on a PC. I have been adding quite a few tags to my photos using Adobe Photoshop Elements. I have my Windows Explorer setup to show hidden files. After reading your post I decide to check.

I turned OFF the option to show hidden files. When I tried to view my tagged photos >>> THEY STILL SHOW UP!

So, you've got the 64 bit version and an upgrade to my OS. Is that a clue? Also, how did you tag the files?

    Good luck, Steve

This is a new bug and hopefully MS will be of some help. For now just keep options set to Show Hidden Files.

    Jpeg tag problem

    Thanks for all your thoughts

This didn't used to be a problem. Previously, I was simply tagging jpeg images using the Windows Explorer interface and happily search by tag in the search window. Now when I tag a jpeg, Windows turns the file into a hidden file. Yes, I can find the file again by turning on 'show hidden files' but this is a new development.

I am also having trouble with the library documenys folder being hidden and restoring this doesn't do the trick.

I found a McAfee technical note relating to their 2011 updates and problems with hidden library folders as I run McAfee security but that doesn't seem to have addressed the problem. But I do wonder if McAfee is causing the problem.

Sorry we haven't been more useful CeeCee. I did ask for help and one other person can replicate the same issue. It is definitely a bug somewhere. May be McAfee at fault, it has shown to be buggy too. I'll have to check the other two users to see if they are using McAfee as well.

Hidden libraries folders and tagged jpeg files

    All

Further to the reported issues with hidden libraries folders and tagged jpeg files, I checked a second laptop at home which has an identical set up to the laptop with the original reported problems. It wasn't suffering issues with libraries folders however it did suffer the same hidden jpeg issue when picture files were tagged.

I subsequently found a McAfee technical support sheet on line - TS101228, Windows 7 Library folders are not being displayed which describes a conflict with McAfee VirusScan 2011 resulting in hidden libraries folders. It sets out a 'workaround' pending a proper patch by McAfee.

I got in touch with McAfee technical support and initiated an online chat. When McAfee VirusScan was disabled, both problems disappeared. I then proceeded to conduct a five and a half hour dialogue with McAfee while they tried to resolve the issues. This involved a registry adjustment and full reinstallation of their product on more than one occasion. This partially resolved the problem however the libraries folders remained hidden. In frustration I deleted them and restored the defaults after the above procedure. Suprisingly, they then performed satisfactorily. I now have libraries folders showing with 'show hidden folders and files' OFF and tagging of jpegs now works. Interestingly, when the tag issue was not working, win7 did not want to save any fresh tags either.

Anyway, I hope the above gives those of you suffering a similar fate some guidance regarding how to resolve it. It certainly appears to be McAfee related. I do not have the full procedure which McAfee and I used as it was somewaht trial and error. I now need to sign in to a repeat session to get my second laptop sorted.

    Regards
