Solved Video of mouse cursor?

Hello,

I am looking for a program that can take video of mouse movement, but ONLY mouse movement. I have found plenty of screen capture programs that are fine for recording the screen as a whole (including mouse), but none that are capable of recording the mouse without the rest of the screen.

I've pretty much tried looking everywhere I can think of but have not found anything. Does anyone know of a program capable of doing this, or am I looking for something that doesn't exist?

If any other information is needed and/or helpful I will try to provide it.
Thanks

I'll do a search, but in the mean time, why? That seems kind of useless...

hi brz05001, and welcome to sevenforums,

that is a pretty unusual request, and i am unaware of any program that will save a video of just your mouse movements.

however, i do know of iograph - it will make an image capturing your mousing around. it's probably not what you want, but i thought i would mention it anyways...oh, and it requires java to run as well if you want to have a play with it.

example output:

For almost everything it would be useless, haha.

However, I am trying to record video of older program(s). Most screen capture programs are not compatible. The one that I found which works for everything I've tried (fraps) does not show a mouse cursor when used on older programs (at least the ones I'm trying to video). So, my thought is that I could record with fraps and then record separately with a video of only the mouse movement. Then I could use the mouse as an overlay in Vegas to get both in one video.

If I have no luck with this I will have to try coming up with another work-around for the lack of cursor.

Thanks for your help, it is greatly appreciated :)

To mickey, thanks for the link but you are correct its not what I'm looking for.

And yes, I'm sure it is not something there is a lot of demand for, which is why I have found it impossible to find in my own search.

Hi, i know a great software which can record your screen (and mouse alongside with it)
You can re-record the mose movements for any video, so give it a try, it has a 30day trial which you can keep looping with if you find it useful :D

I am lost. Can you explain that some more. A screen recording program records anything that is on the screen. How does the "older program(s)" come into here.

My favorite screen recorder is MS Expression Encoder 4 because it produces the best quality. You do need, however, a powerful system because the encoding is a CPU hog. I use the free version which limits the recording time to 10 minutes per shot. For my purposes that suffices.

Speedgamer, thanks for the advice. I have not tried that program yet, but I will.

Camtasia is one of the programs I have tried with no success. Apparently it has problems recording many older programs. I would have expected screen recorders to be able to handle anything on the screen, but it seems many cannot (I am unsure of the exact reasons why).
MS Expression Encoder is another program I have not tried yet. I will take a look at that as well.

The problem the screen recorders seem to have from my research lies in older programs running on windows 7 (again, I'm not sure why this is the case). I have seen the same programs record fine on XP for example. If neither of the recorders suggested work, my plan is to create a virtual machine with an old XP CD I have. From what I can tell this will likely solve my problem.

Thanks everyone for your advice, I appreciate it.

The virtual machine approach may well work. I run Ubuntu in Virtual Box and sometimes do screen recordings from Windows7 - e.g. with Expression Encoder or WMCapture (but the latter does not show the cursor).
