Windows Media Player will only support the following vide file formats/extension :
'.asf', '.avi', '.dvr-ms', '.m1v', '.mp2', '.mp2v', '.mpe', '.mpeg', '.mpg', '.mpv2', '.wm', and '.wmv'.

What is file format/extension : it is represented by the last 3 letters of your file.

If your video files do not have the formats listed above, Windows Media Player (WMP) will not play them.

VLC can because it accepts almost all formats.

You could google for a free video converter and make the format changes so that you could play them in WMP, but why bother when you have VLC.

It is also answered. It is all about the file formats which WMP will accept or not.

If you download and install this codec pack, your WMP will be able to play most of the formats.
