I want to join 2 small AVI files without degrading the quality

I'm making videos of my model stunt airplane with a Samsung camera that records pretty good 720P AVI files. It moves very fast so I have to have decent quality just to follow the action. I tried Free Video Joiner and it's easy to use but it severely degrades the quality. Their home page says "Quickly join and without any quality loss... join AVI, WMV, MOV, MPEG, MPG files." But the output file is severely degraded. For example, I joined a 438 MB and a 330 MB AVI movie and the output file was a blurry 62 MB AVI. It wasn't worth using, especially after converting it to Flash for Youtube. Maybe I need a better program for that too.

Does anybody know of a good freeware program(s) that will do this without totally trashing my movies?

    Thanks,
    Rusty

I've had similar issue I can cut/convert no problem but pasting the snips back into something has been a pain. Everything seems to entail the negative affects you are experiencing. Power director did okay I suppose, but the app and interface seemed to be fluffed to make it look prettier I just want something quick and easy. Would be extra awesome if it supported at least basic transitions.

Not strictly a joiner but a fast converter which has facilities to join files. Freemake | Best Freeware Alternatives To Paid Video Software. It can also create your YouTube upload.

I use QuickMediaConverter to convert the .avi files to .wmv files

Quick Media Converter HD 100% Free - FLV AVC Encoder (Advanced Video Codec High Definition) - HD VIDEO Converter - Quick Media Converter - FAST Youtube FLV Video Converter- Mediaconverter - Full HD AVI DIVX XVID DVD MPEG MPEG2 MP4 MPEG4 MKV MOV QT HD

I use the resize function and set the frame size to match the .avi frame size--then I use 'windows movie maker' to combine/edit the .wmv files--then save movie at the same frame size

my reference to frame size is for example-- 1280x720, 640x480, etc--you should be able to right click the .avi file-select 'properties'--then the 'details' tab to see the frame size.

Take a look at Machete Lite.

It does not re-encode when editing and works on AVI and WMV files. You should be able to do a simple join of the two files. In my experience, there is no quality loss.

Machete Video Editor Lite - Free Video Editor

    It is free.

You can also try with Windows Live Movie Maker. The output quality is pretty decent - not like the old WMM. But Machete that was recommended earlier is the ultimate because it is a lossless editor. There are some restrictions though - all specs of the pieces must be the same. And even the Pro version that I use is pretty cheap - only $40.

Here's a site where you can find a variety of video editing tools:

DVDVideoSoft.com: Download free DVD, iPod, YouTube video converter and editor software and freeware

I don't have any experience with them and you should be aware that they install Open Candy, something that came up on my firewall while I was installing one of them. Easy enough to block, but just be aware of that fact.

    you can use this program,
VirtualDub download (at SourceForge) - virtualdub.org
I just tested it myself and it works.
Load up the first clip and then in the File Menu choose Append Segment and select the next clip. you can keep appending more clips if you like.
Under Video and Audio make sure Direct Stream Copy is selected.
then go to File, and Save as Avi and choose a new name and you are done.

I just tested the latest version on another pair of files and it works just fine.
