Install Shark007 codecs for Windows 7 Shark007's FREE Codec solutions - Windows 7 codecs and you should be able to play mkv files.

No, don't install shark please Birdulike, my suggestion is way better, I've used shark007 several times by the way.

No problem. Let he /she be aware of the various possibilities and choose the one that suits him/her.
I use sharks007 codecs and have no issues with it whatsoever and it is really simple to use especially if you select the recommended settings.
Shark007 is also a sevenforums member and im sure he can add his input as to why you should use his codec pack over another.
Another option is of course to install something like VLC that plays all popular formats natively :)
