Mkv Thumbnails and File Types

Hi I have mkv thumbnails working on Windows 7
But when I associate the .mkv to a media player i.e. Zoom Player
I then no longer get thumbnails for new mkv files
The only solution is not to associate the mkv file to any media player
Open zoom player and then browse to the file.
Is there any way I can associate the mkv to zoom player so I can double click to play it, and still get thumbnails.

Wow how did you get mkv thumbnails to work in the first place? I'm looking for a way to get mkv thumbs and continue to use MPC-HC

I believe you get an option to enable those thumbnails when you install or reinstall k-lite.

The only video playback related app I use is MPC-HC, no codecs, no splitters, nothing else. I assume there is no way to enable mkv thumbs without installing additional codecs or something? I know there is many methods but is there a standalone solution perhaps? I'm not hijacking this thread, these other solutions might be a big help for the thread starter too.

May I explain further?
To get mkv thumbnails working in full colour just install matroska splitter
On to a virgin installation you will get thumbnails every time
But when you associate the .mkv file to anything other than matroska
The thumbnails stop.
If you have already associated the .mkv to a file type then you will need to install sharkies codec pack. You will then only get black or white thumbnails 95% of the time.
The solution would be to re associate the .mkv to matroska only when you have a new .mkv on board and get the colour thumbnails then re-associate back to your media player of choice.
But matroska is not an .exe so you can’t just brows to it and re-associate back and forth. That is why I am asking you clever guys for help.
Some sort of registry hack is needed I think.

Solved

To previw .mkv files in windows 7, you need to download latest Div'X Codec, they embedded thumbnail prieview in their codec pack.
You can download it from here :

Hope all goes right.

Mine thumbnails works fine for me

What does DivX have to do with MKV? H264 videos produced through the DivX suite are still saved in AVI, not MKV...

I have been using it and saw no thumbnails in my MKV files. K-Lite does absolutely nothing as well.
As far as I am concerned, I gave up on thumbnails thinking that they're impossible to generate because MKVs can hold much more information than just audio+video. Perhaps it is a custom font for the subtitles embedded into the container, or maybe chapters generated from a text file prevent a media player from retrieving the thumb, I don't really know.
