Yet another media player to play bluray movies

Today I was lazily browsing the net to find out how the various media players are rated. An article said that Daum Pot Player - successor to the KM player - is the current ruling king. ( I know nothing about KM Player. :))

I was always stuck to WMP and W7MC. Only recently I added Media Player Classic - Home Cinema since it can play blu-ray movies which WMP/W7MC cannot. So my criterion for considering any other media player is whether it can play Bluray movies.

So I downloaded the 32bit English version of the Daum Pot Player, installed and straight away fed it with a bluray disk in my BDROM drive. ( I have anyDVDHD running in the background.) Right click>open> CD Drive Z and off it went. It straight away picked up the main playlist and started playing the bluray movie the same way as MPC-Home Cinema does. One can select the audio and subs from the right-click menu.

As opined in various review articles I selected the Video Renderer Haali. Anything other than "automatic selection" is supposed to result in better picture quality.

Here then is another Bluray movie player The Daum Pot Player. The latest 32bit and 64bit English version can be downloaded from here : DVB Support Download Center » Tools » Players

I have tried only one bluray movie. Those interested may try and post their comments. ( If you are looking for a free on-the-fly decrypter there is DVDFab Passkey lite)

This player as well as many other players will require an on-the-fly decrypter running in the background. Did you have any?

( I have licensed version of Slysoft's AnyDVD but you can try DVDFab Passkey lite which is free. Passkey Lite -- Free and Lite version of Passkey for DVD & Blu-ray)

    thanks for your answer
I have now installed DVDFab Passkey8...
but have no more success with reading BD with PotPlayer
and strangely, though I have associated all supported files with this player, it's Win media player which keeps poping open when I go to play...
    I'm not having fun !!!

So, I just installed the current version of PotPlayer (1.5.36205) x64.

A little playing around with assorted videos finally got me to the few non-default settings which seemed most appropriate and gave me the proper window size and aspect ratio that displayed things correctly. For example, when there is a difference between the "input size" (720x480) and "display aspect ratio" (1.33) in the video the window and presentation needs to be shown using the "display aspect ratio" for proper proportions. So the window should be sized at 1.33 (i.e. 4:3), not 1.5. Same with 1440x1080 "source" vs. 1.78 "DAR", where again the presentation should be shown at 1.78 (i.e. 16:9), not 1.33.

This is certainly an option with PotPlayer which can be selected ("Output aspect ratio: auto-detection"), but for some reason is not the default ("Output aspect ratio: Monitor (recommended)").

Also, I don't know why "default screen size" would be the delivered default, rather than "screen size x1.0 (100%)", so that the window automatically resizes to match the dimensions of the video itself. Again, the user can certainly customize this (and even use the keyboard shortcuts to select a different window size), but as far as delivering a sensible default right out of the installer, my own preference would be for 100%.

Anyway, using the XMP4 skin it certainly looks sleek. And the player so far has played everything I've opened perfectly... in a proper window size once I found the few tweaks which were needed.

But I'm a bit baffled how to play a BluRay movie correctly. When I use PowerDVD12 of course a BluRay movie plays perfectly, including accessing menus, etc. Mostly I can just play the movie from the beginning, in English, with no sub-titles, and have it play from start to finish.

So how would I do the same thing with PotPlayer if I wanted to? I have AnyDVDHD installed and running, and all of the MPTS files in the BDMV folder can certainly be accessed and played individually. But that's not what I want. I want to play "the movie" from start to finish, same as with PowerDVD12.

So what "playlist" file would I choose? Or, how do I know which one or more MPTS files must be selected and played? Or is there some other proper way to actually play the complete movie with PotPlayer that is not obvious to me?

This thread purports to tout PotPlayer as "another media player to play BluRay movies", so I'm sure I'm just missing something. Exactly HOW does one use PotPlayer to actually play a BluRay movie. Again, AnyDVDHD is installed and running, so it's not a decryption issue I'm asking about. It's a navigation issue. How do I actually START the complete playback of the entire movie conveniently??

I just couldn't see the forest for the trees.

To play a commercial BluRay disc with PotPlayer (assuming you have AnyDVDHD installed and running), right-click somewhere in the program window and select OPEN from the popup menu. Then at the bottom of the flyout sub-menu select your CD drive. That should be sufficient to cause PotPlayer to examine the disc, find the \Playlists folder, from within that find the "main playlist" (e.g. 00800.mpls), and start playing.

Or, you can push [F2] to get the "Browse for folder" dialog, and again select your CD drive. Again, the "main playlist" will be discovered and play will begin.

Or, you can "Open Files" and navigate to the \Playlists folder and select what you believe is the 'main playlist". If this is correct, the movie will begin playing.
