Vanishing Videos

I have noticed that a number of videos in my archive have disappeared. It is not a high percentage of the videos, just one here and there. Diagnostics show nothing wrong with the storage drive, nor anything else that I can think of. At first I thought it must have been due to me accidentally deleting a file, or not really having saved it as I thought that I had, but I now know that is not the case.

I'm accustomed to what usually happens when a file becomes corrupted, it just becomes unusable, but still remains visible to the file manager and other programs, but I'm wondering if it might totally disappear?

A few additional suggestions:

First, following up on Wishmaster's suggestion of a 'complete' search, have you searched your entire computer including NON indexed locations?

Also, when I download videos, without my knowing it, they sometimes download under a completely unrecognized name. Is it possible that this has been happening to your 'lost' videos? I think the best way to find out, is to go back to one of them and re-download it, being careful to check to see what name is being given to the download and of course, the location of the download.

Another thought, comes from the fact that you specifically mentioned they were in your 'Archive' which to me, usually signifies older files. Is it possible that when backing up or saving these older files onto your back-up location, they could have gotten saved into a different folder than they should have?

Assuming these videos are deleted from your archived drive,

You can try an undelete utility like "Recuva" do a search on your archive drive. If these files are not overwritten by newer files, you may recover them.

Have a look in the shadowstorage with Shadow Explorer. Maybe you can recover them from there - if you find the file, right click on it and > Export.

I downloaded this program and will experiment with it some, but expect that it will work only at times, since shadow copies come and go as they do.

This got me to thinking about using my True Image backups in the same fashion, since they will remain as long as I decide, and are dated. Since shadow copies are not dated, I'm wondering if the order in which they are displayed in the Device Manager indicates the age of one copy versus another? Is the top one younger or older?

They are dated and in Shadow Explorer you can select them by date.

Right you are. I had only looked for a date in the Device Manager, instead of Shadow Explorer. It won't be of any use at the moment, because I only have two shadows available, and the oldest only goes back to Oct. 1. I won't be able to use my TI backups either, because I failed to consider the fact that I had only used TI to backup the OS's drive...not the video archive. I did that, because I figured that a backup image would take too much space, since one archive is ~ 1100GBs and another is ~ 770GBs. Still looking for a good long term solution.

That's too bad. I am sorry. The disappearance of those files is really a mysterious story.
