Lost thumbnail view for media and video files

I have an MS windows 7 64 bit system. I used CCleaner to clean the registry but did not backup the changes. I have lost my media and video thumbnail view for my movie files with an avi extension. I use both winamp and a VLC media player to play my movies and tv programs.Could the registry cleaning have changed something and is there a way to get the thumbnails back?

CCleaner does delete thumbnail caches, but Windows automatically recreates them once you open a folder containing media files. For movies it just takes a bit longer than for image files. However if all you see is default icons (i.e. the same icon for every media file) you can simply change the view in Explorer.

Also, go to Control Panel -> Folder Options, and switch to the View tab. Make sure that the very first option - Always show icons, never thumbnails - is unchecked.

If that doesn't solve your issue, let us know and we'll try to help you some other way.

    missing thumbnails for movies

I checked the control panel and that is already unchecked. When you say Windows automatically recreates them, how is it done and when, Also,do you mean I need to be using Windows Explorer instead of Firefox for it to be changed back since there doesn't seem to be a thumbnail chooice in firefox.

    Hello jhan46

This is not the first thread I have read where ccleaner has cleaned thumbnails for avi files and the user has been unable to get them back. If you have a system restore point - System Restore use that to restore your system to before you ran ccleaner. In future always save a back-up of any registry changes and I would also uncheck "thumbnail cache" from ccleaners application list.

Umm...yes. I'm not sure why you expect Firefox to restore your thumbnail previews, as this is strictly a Windows Explorer feature. (You don't use Firefox to watch movies, do you...?)

Whenever you open a folder and browse it for media files, Explorer will create thumbnails of all the files in that folder and cache them for later.

xxxdannyxxx: I have allowed CCleaner to clean my thumbnail cache numerous times and can vouch that it doesn't do anything permanent - though the registry cleaner could have been overzealous, you're right about that one.

I also have used the cleaner side of CC to clean the thumbnails with no issues but never use the reg cleaner, but saying that this is about the third thread Ive seen of late with the thumbnail issue after ccleaner and always .avi files.
