Audacity:

Audacity: Free Audio Editor and Recorder

Use version 1.3.13 if you have a PC.

Specifically, you will need to use the "noise removal" filter from the Effect menu. Then export the altered file as a WAV file or as an MP3, whichever you prefer.

You would get a "noise sample" from a portion of the tape that does NOT contain music. You need only a fraction of a second of the noise to get the sample from. You would then select the entire song and apply that noise sample to the entire song.

Make backups of your originals and then do some experimentation with Audacity.

It works VERY well for removing hiss and general background noise.
