low resolution in Media Player

I'm playing AVI/DIVX in MediaPlayer 12 and the quality is poor. The picture is very grainy. I have a HP Pavilion DV6000 with 2GB Ram. The resolution of Windows 7 is perfect. I don't know how to change the resolution in Media Player 12. Any help is appreciated.
