Windows 7: Windows Media Player does not play DVDs when my Soundcard is connected

Windows Media Player does not play DVDs when my Soundcard is connected

Hi guys,

I have an external USB soundcard (Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6), and it has come to my attention that I am completely unable to play DVDs on my computer when my soundcard is connected.

WMP does not give me any error message; it just abruptly stops playing the DVD and the DVD title becomes "Unknown DVD".

However, when I disconnect my sound card, DVDs play as per normal.

I shot a tech support mail to my sound card manufacturer, and this was his reply:

Quote:
"The behavior you describe is normal. The reason is that Komplete Audio 6 features a digital output. The copy protection scheme of Windows blocks the playback of a DVD if a digital audio output is discovered to make it impossible to create 1:1 copy of the audio tracks. So this is not an issue of Komplete Audio 6."

If this is true, is there anything I can do about this? I frequently watch DVDs on my computer and now the only way I can do it is WITHOUT sound!

Thanks for any advice or help!

Have you tried or downloaded any codec packs, Shark 007 codec pack(he is on this forum, many on here use them) or klite.
Or if that does not suit you then VLC or MPc may work as they have built in codecs.

Hi razy,

I do already have KLite codec pack, but again, this is not a codec issue; its the copy protection issue built in with WMP.

I tried downloading both VLC and MPC as you suggested and they indeed do play as per normal; however the picture quality is just.. different using those players. (Lots of 'noise', and frame rates arent as fluid and smooth as when I play the same DVD video on WMP)

You may try running one of the on-the-fly decrypters like DVDFab Passkey lite (free)/AnyDVD (trial) in the background, and check whether it resolves your problem. But be aware that breaking any copyright protection may be illegal in some countries - even in the case of DVDs you own.

Hi, thanks for the suggestion; however they don't work either. I guess they remove different forms of DRM rather than the digital audio protection measure.
