i use real player, it adds a download this video tab on any video on the internet ,you can then convert them to mp3 if its the audio you want.
you can configure it to set a location for the downloads
i use firefox but im assuming it works with other browsers. i will check and let you know.

Most of the time you really don't need an extra d/l er since most of them load into your browser cache & are stored until you go to the next vid

For me, the best add-on for downloading videos not just from YouTube, from all sites almoust.

After installation you'll see icon from VDH and just click on it and you'll be able to download videos.

I know it's maybe late but you can always add the word "kiss" without quotes before the word "youtube" in your URL bar to download the video without any software, and ya you need java runtime installed in your system to save videos from kissyoutube.com...
