Windows 7 - Picture and FAX Viewer download problems

Are there settings that will make the new Picture & FAX Viewer download photos like the (XP) Scanner & Camera Wizard it seems to have replaced? It now just downloads every photo on the camera instead of letting you select the ones you want or where to put them. And there is no way to actually name the photos - the program just gives them a cryptic number that I think includes the date, but will be absolutely meaningless to me years down the road. Am I doing something wrong, or is just another Microsoft "improvement" of our computing experience? Thanks if you can help.
