Avidemux is a free open-source program designed for multi-purpose video editing and processing, which can be used on almost all known operating systems and computer platforms. Avidemux is my personal favorite because of its simplicity yet wide range of tools.

Works great, very quick. I use it to cut out unwanted portions of videos. It can't do anything fancy, but it is very easy to use for its intended purpose.

Yes, Machete is a great editor. It has some restrictions but it is fast and efficient. I have the Pro version which really has nothing extra that I am using. So I recommend to go with the Lite version.

What kind of effects are you thinking about.

I'd suggest you visit this site once a day, sometimes they have free video editor giveaways, but only for a limited time. Over the past three weeks they gave away 2 of them, the only caveat was there was no support for them.
