Windows Media Player 11-can i have som help with dvd's?

    hey all,

i have just reinstalled vista home basic from windows 7 rc 7100 and, of course, all my old files were in the windows.old folder. all of my drivers weren't there so i used driver max to reinstall them. now that issue is fixed, i am having trouble playing dvd's on my laptop. as a default, auto play plays it with windows media player. trouble is, it loads up the player, and then says i don't have a compatible M-PEG 2 DECODER installed. i clicked on web help and found i had to pay for an M-PEG 2 decoder.
(i am only a kid my parents will go mad if i use their debit cards!)

i thought there would be other decoders compatible with wmp11 that i could download for free, but they never worked. i have been trying to find an uninstall option for wmp11 all over the internet, but because i've reinstalled vista, it doesn't show up in add or remove programs.

solving any of the two would really help; uninstalling wmp11 OR finding a free m-peg 2 decoder

    thanks,
    Lil' Domii

somehow something got lost when you went back to windows vista.

For sure, you don't have to pay anything to get that back :)

If you really want to use windows media player and dvd playback is the only thing you want to add, then you can install something like this:

Free-Codecs.com :: DScaler MPEG Filters 0.0.8 : Free MPEG2 video decoder codec. Install Dscaler MPEG Filters and play MPEG2 files

    Should do the trick.

Other than that, I could recommend a codec pack such as cccp (http://www.cccp-project.net/ comes with mpc home cinema and zoom player, but you can still use those codecs with windows media player if you prefer) or vista codec package if you want to install codecs for more formats as well, or some people would recommend a player with built in codecs such as vlc, gomplayer or kmplayer.

But for your specific issue, a mpeg2 codec should suffice, but you probably open other video files as well, so thought I'd recommend more.

let me know how this goes

ok, in that case delete what you just installed and go with the cccp codec pack: Combined Community Codec Pack

for sure, try with one of the included players in cccp once it is installed, don't try with just windows media player.

For what we know, windows media player might need to be reinstalled...

I am willing to help, but I'll need more info about the errors it gives

you said you don't know how to take a screenshots, vista has its own snipping tool that makes it easy (type snipping tool in vista start menu search)

and also, I would need to do if you can play normal video files like avi, and if there are any other problems you've noticed with your os so far.

I am not sure how you came back from windows 7 to vista, seems to me like you just installed vista on top of windows 7

If you run into more problems as you start doing more things, just back up your data and reinstall the os.
