does using the Snipping Tool reduce the quality of the image when

    converted to jpg format?

im using the snipping tool to capture images of paused youtube videos. im wondering if the image quality is reduced when converted to jpg format?

ive already done a few & if there is a difference its very subtle but it looks like there may be some difference. can you confirm whether there is or not?

It depends. Are you using a convertor or simply saving it as a .jpg format? .jpg will normally be slightly worse quality than a .png file but in the end it really depends on what you're trying to screenshot.

Take a look at the following quote, it might help.

GIF format is limited to 256 colors and is a lossless compression file format, a common choice for use on the Web. GIF is a good choice for storing line drawings, text, and iconic graphics at a small file size.

PNG format is a lossless compression file format, which makes it a common choice for use on the Web. PNG is a good choice for storing line drawings, text, and iconic graphics at a small file size.

JPG format is a lossy compressed file format. This makes it useful for storing photographs at a smaller size than a BMP. JPG is a common choice for use on the Web because it is compressed. For storing line drawings, text, and iconic graphics at a smaller file size, GIF or PNG are better choices because they are lossless.

What program are you using? It probably doesn't support saving as .png.

All files just allows you to see all files and give any extension, but that doesn't mean it'll work. The program has to have the code to write the file and if it does it's usally list it as a save as type anyway.

Use can use All Files in Notepad to save a txt file as a bat or cmd because these are read as plain text.

'save as' gives other file formats; also irfanview allows various file formats (irfan is free ).
