    Good DVD conversion software

I was using Recode in Nero 7, I was just wondering whether there were better options available for free, or not too much money.

There are many free tools. Depends on source and output types and what you will play the output on. But this search engine lets you select video input and output types, also subtitle, audio, authoring etc.. tools:

    Dvd Conversion Tools

Depends on what your goal is exactly ?

are you using recode to shrink the dvd for copying or to store it on you computer to be viewed via MCE or somthing similar ?

VLC is your firend it can transcode almost all types of video to any other type of video. (thats if your looking at converting to a single file) i cant do an exact TS Stream (transport stream) of PS Stream (Program Stream) Copy to most formats or maintain the container type and change from one media to another.

if you want to reburn (i may sound old here) DVD Shrink has never let me down

if your unfamiliar with the transport stream vs program stream you should look into the method by which dvds are delivered.

a good example of the diffrence is in mediaportal and the videocapture method for DVB. if you capture the transport stream (while recording a tv show) you will not only record that tv show but all tv shows in the stream this mans if one transponder transmits 4 channels you will grab them all as well as subtitles and other view angles. the alternative is only grab the program stream which will grab only what you select so it will save space but not have subtitles or extra languages.

    i hope this helps

Sorry, I was using Nero recode to convert to the Nero Digital format, so my goal is to do a similar thing. I do use DVD Decrypter/Shrink to burn discs sometimes, but mostly I just convert DVD's to 2GB files to store on an external drive and play through my WDTV

As always, it's a speed vs space trade-off. I have Gen1 WD HDTV for USB. MakeMKV is fine for episodic DVD input to individual .mkv title outputs. You can rip directly from the optical drive to the HD as .mkv titles. WD reads the vobsubs out of mkv fine. .mp4 will give you better quality for the file size but you have to spend the time to do the conversions to save the space.

There's a Tool TEncoder that runs in batch mode. But I think you may have to get the DVD titles into .mpg files before you can add them. Not sure. But I have used it to go from .mkv to .mp4 just encoding the audio stream. You can find it on the same site I mentioned above.
