OK I found a cable, plugged it in and after a minute it came up with a prompt saying 'Non-compliant audio USB device installed' - green tick - ready to use. Not sure what that means entirely, I think I need an application to adjust the volume and such with it too, but no idea where to find that. That might be the application that I need to install using the backwards compatibility feature. This one here, but I can't find anywhere to download it-

Just googled 'altec lansing drivers' their site directs you to this page and offers you a download not for the software but for an application that helps you find software. not so sure about installing this, would rather find the software myself, preferably from the altec lansing website using their search engine if possible...?

Hardware Helper Online: Altec Lansing device drivers

Yep and this page it also directs you to is partnered with norton and Macafee.... (nuff said)

I'm looking for software to adjust my speakers through my computer, not an app to help me find software!

How did you install them initially? Do you have the old DELL CD/DVD that came with your old computer?

It must have had the drivers stored in the speakers and they installed automatically.

there isn't anything even about the speakers on their main site, they're well old like. Still sound great.

I've got an old copy of Tomb Raider 1 for windows 95 or something I might try installing that see if I can get it to play sometime.

The drivers would not have been in the speakers; they had to have either been installed via disc/diskette or already on the computer after DELL built it and loaded the drivers themselves. Either way, I would expect the software to have been given to you as part of the computer kit.

I lost the software when I reinstalled everything years ago. No longer have that computer... but I still have the old HD. And what drivers did it install then? I've heard of preinstalled driver software, can't see why it can't be a feature of the peripheral.

Pre-installed driver software means that you install the drivers on the operating system before the hardware is ever plugged in. Windows 7 has many such drivers included so that the hardware can be used immediately after plugging it in. The newest hardware will not be supported because Microsoft developers did not know about it in advance. Older, unsupported hardware has similar issues, except as you've found, it is much more difficult to find drivers for the devices.
