using media player to watch movies with subtitles and need codecs

when i download a torrent-movie with subtitles, the subtitles will not show using windows media player.

i was told that i have 2 options.

    1. download another player like VLC.
    2. get the right codecs for wmp.

i think i would rather download the needed codecs if it will save space on my computer. however i have no idea what that means or how to do it. can you tell me what i need to do to install the correct codecs for windows media player so that i can see the subtitles?

An easy and interesting solution is to stop pirating, illegally downloading copyrighted stuff from illegal sources and buy movies legally on DVD and / or Blue-Ray. On legal disks you can normally select subtitles in any player, WMC, WMP, VLC etc.

I use this method and it works very well.

overlooking the useless comment above because I am not your judge/jury/ or executioner,
you can install codecs specifically designed for use in WMP.
Use the Win7codecs and the 64bit addon if your system is 64bit.

Here is an alternate download location for the Win7codecs
The MajorGeeks page seems to have issues at this time.

Shark, the respect I have had for for you and your codecs just disappeared because of your comment above.

Please read paragraph 4 of the rules of the Seven Forums:

    4) No discussion of piracy or anything illegal is allowed at all. Such as software, music, videos and other intellectual property violations.
In accordance of the rules I offered a solution that is both legal and valid. Please could you tell me how is that useless?

Kari, I am uninterested in your respect. You are the only one discussing Piracy.
Just because you download illegal torrents doesnt make all torrents illegal.

    The user question is...
can you tell me what i need to do to install the correct codecs for windows media player so that i can see the subtitles?
and my response is valid, where your response is illegal. Get off your high-horse and troll elsewhere.

       Warning
    Shark,

You just lost my respect as well. I suggest you get off your high horse instead and stop being rude and arrogant like this for no reason at all towards others.

    On that note, goodbye.
