| Windows 7: Video thumbnail previews gone after uninstalling K-Lite codecs |

Video thumbnail previews gone after uninstalling K-Lite codecs OK, so I'm pretty sure there's a gazillion threads on this issue but I've read A LOT of them and still, haven't found anything helpful (to me at least).
The problem started when I uninstalled K-Lite Codec Pack 8.80 (Full) after which all of my video thumbnail previews disappeared. I've checked the folder options and made sure that each is as it should be and still, nothing. What I have discovered though is that it's probably a registry issue. Also, re-installing the K-Lite Codec Pack fixes the issue, but i don't want it anymore and instead am going to be using CCCP (which does not fix the thumbnail problem, btw). If anyone can help me with this it would be much appreciated. | My System Specs |

Thanks, will check that later. Although I guess what I'm also trying to ask is, does Windows 7 display these video thumbnail previews by default? | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit CPU Intel Pentium E5700 Motherboard P5G41T-M LX Graphics Card Zotac GTS 450 AMP! not all, avi and mkv dont show .
are any thumbnails displaying?
there are a couple of things to try if you have no thumbnails whatsoever. Icon Cache - Rebuild
if that doesnt work try this also... Thumbnail Cache - Clear and Reset | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Hewlett packard/p6512uk OS Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 7600 CPU IIx4 amd athelon 635 processor Motherboard FOXCONN 2AA9 Memory 2x2gb Graphics Card ati radeon HD 5450 Sound Card (1) Realtek High Definition Audio (2) AMD High Definition Monitor(s) Displays samsung lcd tv 32" Screen Resolution 1360x 768 Keyboard wireless hp Mouse wireless Hp,optical PSU ? Ok, so before I tried Icaros I did a bit of digging in my program files and I found that K-Lite Codecs comes with Icaros so I guess that's why re-installing K-Lite solves the problem. Also I've tried rebuilding the cache and clearing/resetting it through disk cleanup, but still nothing. Again, while searching through the control panel I came across the "Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program" setting and I've found that there is no .avi extension on the list (along with .mkv). After seeing this I'm guessing that video file extensions which aren't listed won't have a thumbnail preview? - a noob conclusion.
I'm really fussy about the way things "should work" so I'm wondering if there's a "proper" registry fix for this? | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit CPU Intel Pentium E5700 Motherboard P5G41T-M LX Graphics Card Zotac GTS 450 AMP! try this... Default File Type Associations - Restore
failing that there is one last thing i can think of SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
i removed my codec pack as i no longer needed it ,i use splash player pro ex ,(there is a free lite package).
i have icaros and it displays my avi and mkv thumbs, all my video filetypes are set to open with splash and the thumbs display.
i looked into why the thumbs showed with the codec packs and icaros was the reason, i was pleased to find a stand alone install of it as i had a codec pack installed just to display the thumbs.
the only filetype splash wont play is flv, for this i use vlc.
edit : what media player are you using?, im guessing wmp or wmc hence the need for a codec pack.
installing another player may then give the option for the file association to show avi and mkv, just a guess

ok , so can you see the avi and mkv files in the default files settings.
i would right click an avi then select open with, set the default player and that should be fine ,icaros will display the thumbs for you.
same for mkv.
this will associate a file type to a software .
by default explorer doesnt show thumbnails for avi and mkv, and more. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Hewlett packard/p6512uk OS Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 7600 CPU IIx4 amd athelon 635 processor Motherboard FOXCONN 2AA9 Memory 2x2gb Graphics Card ati radeon HD 5450 Sound Card (1) Realtek High Definition Audio (2) AMD High Definition Monitor(s) Displays samsung lcd tv 32" Screen Resolution 1360x 768 Keyboard wireless hp Mouse wireless Hp,optical PSU ?
