    jpg thumbnails turn black

Folder with jpgs in them with thumbnail view, some thumbnails are black. If i cycle through the thumbnail size options, some more of the existing thumbnails turn black. If the images or folders are copied to another drive, it presents the same characteristic. chkdsk ok. I have disabled and deleted the swap file. cleared the thumbnail cache. turned on and off thunbnails in folder options and performance tab, and on and off in gpedit. The system has been rebooted without any startup items, but all services. I've reset the text size to 100%, down from medium. cleared all thumbnails with cleanmgr.

I am out of ideas. most strange is that sometimes you can click into a folder where thumbnails exist, and watch some...not all, of them turn black. the image itself is fine. most of the time the preview shows in the preview pane, but not in the status line of explorer.

this is win7 64. I've run out of things to try. i can rotate an image from the context menu, the thumbnail and statusnail will appear. if i rotate it back, it will turn black again. If i rotate and close, and then rotate and close again in the windows image viewer, the thumbnail is fine.

this is a pretty good mystery. any ideas anyone?

    Hello Bloort,

I've seen this happen to some folks that have a lot of large image files in the folder. Would this apply to you?

they're just camera pictures, maybe 4 meg each. and it will happen with folder containing even a dozen images. if set on medium size thumbnail, when i open the folder...2 might be black. if i cycle through the preview option (small med large etc), once i return to medium size... many of the thumbnails will turn black in a method as if thumbnails are being created, you know, one by one. at this point, both the preview pane and status line will just show black. no problem with image viewers or editors. i mapped over from XP and no trouble making thumbnails. no edits on the images, and nothing special that i can see. copying folders to another drive produces the same result. only if i edit and save the image does the problem _apparantly_ subside. OR if i copy a single image into an existing folder it seems to work again. (if i copy 2 at the same time, problem still exists. very strange indeed.

and not the same camera..the images and folder sets span back many years, from many sources.

    Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
4mb is pretty big for a jpeg
Most people stay away from jpeg's in general and stick with raw file types in cameras
It's either that or use the cameras photo viewer instead of explorer
Or a much better photo viewer/ editor like photoshop/ lightroom....
    Cheers.
