    windows 7 codecs

ok i have just bought a new laptop and i want to install my codec packs on it so i did exactly what i did on my old computer but i didn`t get the results i wanted !!

now my question is : Is their any way i can copy and paste the codecs with their .dll that are located in the system and the install stuff from my old computer ?

i tried all the codecs pack but none give the thumbnails i want !!!
all i want is to get the same codecs that are located on my old computer and copy them to my new computer

Get VLC Media Player. VideoLAN - Official page for VLC media player, the Open Source video framework!
It pretty much supports all codecs from installation, no external downloads needed.

If you really feel the need to install codecs to anticipate any failure in running various media you can use the latest K-Lite Code Pack (Ver.9.3) From here. If you don't need the classic media player you can uncheck it during installation.

Sorry for wasn't catching you up. On my PC it depends, some mp3 with embedded picture will show it as thumbnail the rest will just appear with standard icon of related application to open. For most AVI, WMV, and mpg will show the first frame, but not for mov, mkv, and some others, just the standard icons.

You can not just copy the dlls, as most of the dlls have dependency and some of them require registration. So the best way is still to download codec pack.

However, I guess Windows 7 did a good job by embedding common used codec to Windows.

I agree with Jayw, unless you have the old codec installer, you're likely to get issues.

I can say Shark007's codec pack is the best if you want to use Windows Media Player.
