Get VLC Media Player. VideoLAN - Official page for VLC media player, the Open Source video framework!
It pretty much supports all codecs from installation, no external downloads needed. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom Build by me OS Windows 7 64-Bit CPU AMD Phenom II X4 975 3.60 GHz Motherboard ASRock 970 Extreme3 Memory Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 8GB Graphics Card EVGA GTS 450 Sound Card ASRock 970 Extreme3 Motherboard Monitor(s) Displays Acer G235HAbd 23' Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard eMachines keyboard from 2004 Mouse Microsoft Sidewinder X8 PSU CORSAIR CX600W ATX12V Case Antec 300 w/ Leds Cooling Antec 300 Stock Hard Drives 360 GB 7200 RPM HDD Internet Speed 6MB / 1MB |

If you really feel the need to install codecs to anticipate any failure in running various media you can use the latest K-Lite Code Pack (Ver.9.3) From here. If you don't need the classic media player you can uncheck it during installation.

Sorry for wasn't catching you up. On my PC it depends, some mp3 with embedded picture will show it as thumbnail the rest will just appear with standard icon of related application to open. For most AVI, WMV, and mpg will show the first frame, but not for mov, mkv, and some others, just the standard icons. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Self built system OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64 CPU CORE i5 Motherboard Intel DH55PJ Memory 4GB Graphics Card ATI HD 4650 Sound Card Realtek HD Integrated Monitor(s) Displays LG Flatron L1742S; LG Flatron 19"; Toshiba 32" Screen Resolution 1280 x 1024; 1366 x 768 Keyboard Logitech Wireless Mouse Logitech Wireless PSU Power Case Simbadda Cooling Conventional Hard Drives Seagate Barracuda 500 GB

You can not just copy the dlls, as most of the dlls have dependency and some of them require registration. So the best way is still to download codec pack.
However, I guess Windows 7 did a good job by embedding common used codec to Windows. | My System Specs | | |

I agree with Jayw, unless you have the old codec installer, you're likely to get issues.
I can say Shark007's codec pack is the best if you want to use Windows Media Player. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number custom built OS Win 7 Pro 64-bit 7601 CPU AMD Phenom 9650 QuadCore, revision DR-B3 Motherboard ASUS M4A78 Memory 4,00 GB Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT Sound Card Realtek High Definition Audio Monitor(s) Displays Fujitsu Siemens P19-3P Screen Resolution 1280 x 1024 x 32 bits @ 60 Hz Oh yeah, 4:3 rocks!
