Change default media player, icons on media files not changed

I have VLC Portable as the default program for opening some video files, like .mp4 and .avi. And I have Foobar (portable) as the default program for .mp3.

Usually the icons on .mp4, .avi, .mp3 files get updated with the icons of the assigned media players.
But on this PC it's not working. They're still the same icons as if WMP was the default player.

Does it have to do with the Standard user account? (Because on other PCs I run from an Admin account and I don't have such problems.)

Update: Tried on the Admin account on that PC, still the same.

Do I have to remove WMP to make it work? (I would remove it, but I need WMC, so I can't.)

Have you rebooted after you made the changes? Have you tried actually using anything to see if it defaults to your specified player?

Something wrong with the associations. Btw, WMP cannot be removed unless you slipstream the system.

    Yes, I tried rebooting.
And yes, the files do open with my specified players. It's only the icon that is the problem.

I meant removed in "Turn Windows features on or off". On other systems I've done just that and I don't have this problem, so it seems like it could be the solution (but as I said, I can't do that on this system).

Also, on files which don't have WMP as the default program (.flac or .mkv) there is no problem. With those I see the icon of the specified program.
The problem is only with file extensions which open with WMP by default.

    Update:

I tried on another Windows installation inside Virtualbox and I saw the same problem.

So I disabled WMP/WMC and I was able to get the proper VLC icon (for .mp4 files).

But as soon as I re-enabled WMP/WMC, the icon changed back, even tho VLC was still the default program for opening those files.

So it seems it's a Windows bug.
