    Choppy Video Playback on WMP

I am running a fresh install (Clean) of Windows 7 Professional x64, and I have to say I was impressed at the lack of any codecs that needed to be installed to watch the run of the mill .avi files I use (xvid I believe).

The video playback is almost perfect, but i notice periods of slowdown and choppiness in the video (the sound does not skip at all) - which is a problem I did not have in Vista x64.

Is this due to a generic WMP codec? I would rather not install another media player if not necessary - anyone else see this issue?

    Thanks

I've also noticed some slight choppiness come and go with WMP. I've had no luck trying to pin down the cause tho. I only have DiVX 7 and AC3Filter installed (needed to play my mkv files).

I had this problem as well, and spent weeks trying all kinds of codecs, driver, you name it.

Turned out to be graphics card on 24hz, while lcd screen's native refresh is 60hz.

Changing the refresh rate to 60hz cured all my video choppiness.

I changed the settings, it seems as if it improved slightly, but still not back to normal. Ill just chalk it up to the new version of media player not playing nice. I did download VLC player - the choppiness is gone, but it seems to me im noticing a lesser quality than im used to. I am just nitpicking now, maybe the picture is sharper with this player and im noticing stuff that has always been in there in the first place.

    Thank you for the replies

You do have HD resolution set?

    1920x1080 x 60hz ?

Have you updated your video card's driver?

Edit- Found my problem! It was the stupid C1E/C2E option in the bios. I guess my cpu does not like its clock speed dropping. Don't know why I was using that to be honest, things are a lot better and much faster all around now.

Edit- I also removed DiVX 7 and installed CoreAVC and the included Haali Media Splitter. Things are even better. It's not free but its worth every single penny of the asking $15 price. Worth looking into

I recently started using Shark007's w7 codecs for x86 & x64 which work with most media players including WMP, (however I prefer MPC-HC, but the Shark packages play nice with that too). It includes all the FFDshow stuff and more, basically everything you need in one nice package (or two if you want to install both x86 and x64 stuff).

Although they didn't noticeably improve my already good viewing experience with MPC-HC, Haali, AC3 Filter, etc., I really like the way his codec package is light yet sufficiently comprehensive and provides easy integration & configuration of the above mentioned filters and splitters among others, and looks like it should be fairly easy to keep everything updated and current without messing things up once you have them configured the way you want.

(Only thing it's missing, afaictsf, imo, is a built in visual codec tool tool like graphedit or graphstudio, but that's easily fixed since they're also freely available. Edit: Just noticed he has graphedit and experimental versions of MPC-HC on his "tools" page which is handy.)
