Files will not play in Windows Media Player

I have holiday movie clips taken on my Panasonic camcorder. I have copies on both desktop pc and laptop. The files used to play ok on both pc's but will not now play on my desktop anymore. I have tried copying the ones that play ok on the laptop back to the pc but the problem still exists. I can also open the files on the desktop pc using nero quick media viwer but when I try to open with Windows Media Player I get an error message in a dialogue box saying " Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file." I thought I would uninstall WMP and re-install but cannot see this as an option in control panel. I have right clicked the files and associated them with Windows Media Player but this does not help. The files show up as the Type "Movie Clip" ( .MOD Extension) Any suggestions on how I could get back on track much appreciated.

Yeah I know mate. I'd scrap WMP all together. You always encounter a problem or two on there. I don't think i've ever gone wrong with VLC *fingers crossed*

Tried the suggestion from boohbah but still the same problem. Not sure what to do now. Is there any way to re-install/repair WMP

it may be something as simple as installing some extra codecs that will play .mod files in wmp.

    these ones here do.
make a system restore point first,in case you run into any probs.
