Windows 7: Mp3 files question

Hello forum.

I've recently had my pc formatted and installed windows 7. When I used to download songs(open source music samples that is)they use to download in Mp3 format,but now when I download They are in VLC format, I also installed Quicktime and still cant seem to have them in MP3 format. Is there something I have to install so they download by default as Mp3?

Depending on where The VLC plug-in is located (check all browsers and explorer), find it and disable it.

are you sure they are not still mp3 but displaying the vlc file icon ,
right click one and check the properties.
if it is an mp3 then it is to do with the file associations ,you need to right click and select open with, then select a default media player you want to open them. wmp for instance will show a different icon. (possibly what you are used to seeing previously. )

I have never heard of a VLC format. The files may be in .flv which you get with video downloads.

The other possibility is that your filetype association for .mp3 was chnged to VLC.

Hello! Yes the filetype assosiation has changed. I need it back to mp3. So ill look into it a.s.a.p so i have to disable the plug in as suggested?thank you.

Yes, find it and disable it.

If there is no plug-in, you may have to delete the VLC program. Look in Control Panel >Programs and Features for VLC (VideoLAN Client).

If you are able to disable or delte, don't forget, you will have to re-download the song files.

If they still won't save as .mp3, and only as .vlc or .flv take a look here: How To Convert Video Files to MP3 with VLC - How-To Geek

This will be only a work around until we can find somethng more permanent.

That was epic! I choose to open files with wmp and everything turned into MP3 Format Sound (.mp3)

glad its sorted for you,
just to say the files were always mp3, they did not change, the media player that was set to open them had changed.
the only thing that was wrong for you was you were seeing the vlc icon and not the wmp icon.
However they were still mp3 that would play in in any media player but not showing the wmp icon.

this is my winamp icon but you can clearly see its an mp3.
(the winamp icons are extras i installed as a plugin for winamp)
