Windows DVD Maker - Having Trouble Making a DVD With it

I hope I'm in the right forum for asking this question. If I am not, could someone point me where I should be posting it? Thanks.

I suppose the best way of describing my situation is to start at the beginning.

I had a bunch of VHS tapes of my family that I decided to have transferred on to DVDs. Now that they are on DVDs, through a free program, I have managed to edit the DVDs so that I can now select the parts that I want to use on any, new blank DVD.

I then decided to use Windows DVD maker because I quite liked the menus. I followed everything that you should do on a You Tube demonstration. Then I chose three of the chapters I had edited from my DVD home collection. After that, I burnt it to a blank DVD.

When I hit play, the menu I had chosen was first class from Windows DVD maker. The problem came when I selected the first scene. It started playing but after a short while, it started to jump and then it went back to the beginning again and it kept doing this in a loop. I thought this may be something that I had undertaken incorrectly so I went through the whole procedure again to see what happened a second time. Exactly the same happened the second time so I have wasted two blank DVDs trying to get this to work with the menu in Windows DVD maker.

Can anybody tell me from the description I have given what I'm doing wrong? Do I need to convert my DVD home movies that I saved to my hard drive to a different file format first and then go through Windows DVD maker? If this is the case, can someone give me a step-by-step instructional guide on how to do this and how I can still use the menus in Windows DVD maker along with the chapters playing normally as they should do?
