Cannot open screen resolution advanced tab, video won't play

I just did the latest round of Windows 7 updates and rebooted my computer.

I noticed that video would not play. When I try to play video in Windows Media Player, it crashes:

When I try to play video in VLC player, it crashes:

I Googled this issue and found that people recommended changing your graphics card acceleration settings. To get there you right click on the desktop, go to screen resolution, and choose the advanced tab. When I do that, it crashes.

Here is some more info that may be relevant:

1) I can play video in Safe Mode in VLC player. Media Player will not load in Safe Mode, though. There's no error, it just doesn't load at all.

2) Since this started I have regularly been getting "Shockwave may have stopped responding" errors in Firefox. The window often disappears before I can click "Continue" or "Stop Script." I thought this may be causing the error so I uninstalled both Shockwave and Flash. I still cannot play video so it may not be related.

3) I used the MicrosoftFixIt tool to fix Windows Media Player. Windows said it detected some errors and fixed them, but I still cannot play video.

Since the problem is affecting every video player I try, I suspect it's with the video card. Media Player and VLC player will play audio files just fine, but they crash on video.

If there was not an issue with the players before the update. Then try System Restore, to undo the recent changes.

Ok I think I've gotten it fixed.

After I uninstalled Shockwave and Flash I was able to access the screen resolution advanced tab. I don't know if this was coincidental or not.

From that tab, the option to change settings in the Troubleshoot tab was greyed out. This is where video acceleration normally is, so I tried the AMD Catalyst Control Center tab instead. When I tried to load the control center I got a message saying the AMD software was not installed.

Device Manager said the video drivers were last updated in 2011. I went to AMD's website and downloaded the newest version of Catalyst and installed it and it seems to work. I can play video in Windows Media Player again and access all the screen resolution menus.

I reinstalled Shockwave and Flash.

I noticed someone else on this forum had the same problem, too.
