Windows 7 fails to recognize video files

It seems like ever since i was messing around with Sony Vegas Pro i happened to install a Quick Time plugin for Vegas...Then i got rid of it but something strange occurred...Now every video file (.avi, .mkv, .mpg, .mpeg, wmv ... etc. ) without exceptions is not recognized by the system. Every time i double click such file the screen that allows you to choose how to open the file pops up. Even if i choose the program, let's say KMPlayer and put a tick on 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file', nothing changes. The video opens, everything works perfect, but the system still does not recognize the file/s. Any suggestions ?
