How can I arrange the sequential indexing of pics in windows 7

When importing pics into a Windows XP folder. It helpfully followed the sequential indexing already in the folder. My folder was named 'Camera stuff' and the pics were named and indexed as 'Stuff 1, Stuff 2, Stuff 3' etc. I didnt have to add the number or the name myself it just worked out that the next one (as an example to the above) would be 'Stuff 4'. That way I didnt have to search for recent pics . They were always the last in.

But how can I make Windows 7 do the same if it's possible. Nothing I've tried so far with the 'tags' works out the same.

    Thanks

Rename or move to a new folder then rename

If you import the pics into a new folder then highlight all pictures you can simply rename sequentially by right clicking the first image and then rename it to something like stuff01.jpg - press Enter and the remaining pictures will be renamed in sequential order.

Thanks Callender. But the next time I import into the same folder will the new pic be added sequentially after the last without my repeating the steps you list above?

Adding pictures to a folder in sequence

Just importing more pictures won't change the file names. You just need to use the same method on the newly imported pictures by highlighting those new pictures then using the same method. Just rename the first new picture as the next one in the sequence. I'll try posting some screenshots.

In this example I've highlighted the newly imported pictures and renamed the first of those pictures to stuff (11).jpg and the remainder are renamed in sequence automatically.

Hi some program and online services like Skydrive as an example use the numbers as a string so sometimes you'll get mixed results of sorting,
So often it's best to use a numbering which starts with a few zeros Name-0001............
But (1).......... might help in that reading of the string I've not tested it so I'll assume it will do as suggested,
    Cheers.
