2 copies of pictures on external drive - can only display one

Not sure how to explain this - see attached.

I have my photos on my external drive, and as you can see, there are two of each, one with the short name, and one with the short name plus a long extension. Of note, these photos are from a different computer that is not currently attached to the external drive. This does not happen on my laptop that is attached to the external drive.

I've not opened the docx file as very suspicious of opening them, you should post a screenshot or jpeg but have you checked to see if one of them is a thumbnail and the other the larger sized original image?

Are they both image files and are you sure one isn't some kind of index file?

If you took the photos using a high spec camera (maybe a cannon eos 5d or sony a65 etc) then you may just have jpeg files and ARW files, you need to look at the file sizes(ARW will be much larger file size but will not usually display as u would need to view in special viewer, explorer doesn't usually preview ARW files, this is likely your problem but not sure......

Hope this gives you something to go on....

The extension of both is .jpeg - the one with the short name is a little larger 524 vs 597 KB. they were taken with a basic $100 camera, nothing fancy. Not sure how to tell if one is an image file, or an AWR file.

    thanks again.

Thnx for posting, the first attachment shows up this end as a docs file which is the one I didn't open.
I see your jpg u posted now and a PDF along with it which I haven't viewed yet...

When the files came From a different pc and u put on external and then view on a diff pc then u sometimes get a issue with file permissions so u need to right click any pics u can't view and take ownership of them, I had this issue just a few days ago.

Sorry I'm not able to help much, hope I'm giving u some ideas on what they may be.

Sorry I just looked at your PDF which hadn't done previously due to my being paranoid of viruses!lol

But I see what you need now.... The issue is due to copying files from another pc and u don't have permission to view.

Try right clicking the file, I think it's undertaken he security tab u should see a continue button which takes u to a screen of user accounts where u can assign permissions, here u need to ensure that your username has full permissions, u will have to do this for each image which u can't view.
I'd try to do it this way first but if u get no joy.... there is a great little fix which will allow u to right click the file or folder and take ownership of the files allowing u to view them all, here is the link if u need it:

It seems windows 7 is the problem with the file permissions, it happens not just with images but music, videos etc. I've installed that take ownership reg entry and it's now in my right click menu so I can now just right click the picture or videos folders and take permission of entries folders as u may get hundreds of files where u can't view them.
I have no idea how this will effect the image when u go back to your other pc so I highly advise making a copy of the image off your hard drive onto the pc, eg. Copy and paste, and then once u have installed the take ownership widget, own all the files with an issue opening, this will fix.

I'd first try via the right click properties menu tho as it may be very easy and n I need for the take ownership widget although I find it very useful since I'm using a external drive and finding loads of files I cannot open.
