Photo Gallery can't open photos -unsupported, damaged or corrupted

I transferred pictures from a memory card in my camera to a computer and then from there to my external hard drive. When I opened my hard drive next time to look at the pictures they had disappeared. I ran a photo recovery program and recovered them. Now my Photo Gallery can't open them, it says they are unsupported, damaged or corrupted. What can I do to try to open them? Thank you so much!
