Windows Media player corrupted playback

I am suddenly having issues playing back specifically the MPEG2 video files in WMP, it parses i think fine, but what happens is the audio pips and squeaks, stalls while it "buffers" the file, then plays about 5 seconds of the video with no audio, then starts playing back the video at 0.5FPS while the audio continues to pop and squeak, every other format of supported video including MPEG4, MP3, wav, WMV, WMA etc. playback fine, its just the mpeg2, i tried installing codecs, but that didn't do squat
