    Windows Media Player

Anyone able to offer any advice on the following?

My Windows 7 is up to date and is running Windows Media Player 12.0.7601.18150. If I want WMP to play .3GP format recordings, I had to resort to use VLC, or install K-Lite Codec Pack. My Windows 8 shows it is running Windows Media Player 12.0.9600.17031 and can play all my .3GP recordings without any further software.

Is it possible and if so how, can I update WMP on Windows 7 to 12.0.9600.17031.

    Regards

    Steve

Try installing Windows Essentials Codec Pack from HERE
Make sure you install the 32 bit version if you are in 32 bit windows and 64 if you are in 64 bit windows!

Hi, Thanks for such a quick reply. Your suggestion does work, as does installing K-Lite Codec Pack. I would like not to install either of these and somehow update WMP to the newest version 12.0.9600.17031.

Any idea how to do this.

    Cheers

I don't think it is possible. Version 12.0.9600 is not considered an update. It was designed specifically for Windows 8, including removal of the DVD playback capability.

There is no escape. Windows 7 is very poor in codec support and in no case do you want to install these junky codec packs. VLC (which has it's own codecs) is the best solution or Windows 8.1 which is a bit better in codecs - but still not perfect.

Linux is also a lot richer in codecs. I always have a virtual Linux machine running in the background that I can use for difficult codecs.
