Windows 7 not recognizing .xmp & .ORF picture files from photoshop

Backed up my 5000 photos to an ext. HD from photoshop elements. I've tried the "backup" and "copy" pathways. When I attempt to restore my photos to my new computer, also windows 7, the .xmp and .ORF files will not open. I'm hoping someone has an explanation for this. If I can't restore these images into my new computer I'll be devastated.

    Hi,
I'm not at all sure windows would be able to do anything with them anyway ?
Do you have photoshop installed ?
You can either open photoshop and use Import and search for the files or right click the file and use Open with and search for photoshop.exe,
    Cheers.

I see youhave been using Elements as a photo editor. What version have you got installed on the new PC. Some of the older versions of Elements could not recognize RAW files without you installed an add on. I see you have ORF files, this is the generic RAW format for Olympus Cameras. Take just one of your ORF files and change the extension to RAW and see if Elements will open that. Your .xmp files are NOT photo files but data files relating to the metal data of each ORF file. They should open with MS Word or similar.
