Windows Media player opens cds as cda

In the last two days my Windows Media Player version 12.0 has started opening my original music purchased cds as cda. It can't play the tracks and there is no album info, nothing, until I convert them with a different program. Now, I am a spritely but getting older senior citizen so if I have left out anything, Please let me know.

Windows 7 64bit Running Firefox.

Any one have suggestions?

The .cda is the format of the files on the CD, about 1KB in size. Can't usually see the songs directly. What program other than Windows Media Player are you using? WMP can Rip the songs and save as .wav, .wma [Windows Media Audio] or .mp3.

I downloaded potplayer. and I downloaded fairstars to change them from cda to mp3. Just don't understand how it changed from reading the cd properly to opening so crazy.

The only thing I can think of is that somewhere along the way an incorrect choice was made in the Autoplay/Autorun window that came up after inserting an Audio CD.

The .cda file on CDs is only a pointer to the actual music which is not visible. The format of the CD is CDFS.

If the disc is read in Windows Explorer double-clicking a .cda file should open Windows Media Player. If that opens a different player it could be the file association is messed up.
